AI in the Journal
Journal Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Publications and Review
The editorial board of the journal Ontology of Designing recognizes the growing availability and use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools in academic research and establishes the following guidelines for how authors, reviewers, and editorial staff members should work with GenAI.
- GenAI cannot be listed as an author in the journal’s publications. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based programs and tools do not meet the authorship requirements, as they are not and cannot be held responsible for the submitted work, cannot declare conflicts of interest, or manage copyright.
- The editors do not prohibit the use of AI-based programs in abstract preparation and research for additional literature. Image generation and editing are prohibited. Authors should be aware that GenAI programs often convey false information, which requires additional verification. To protect privacy, authors are advised not to upload sensitive personal information about real people when interacting with GenAI.
- Authors must acknowledge the contribution of GenAI tools to any aspect of the published research. In their manuscripts, authors must include the name, version, and scope of the AI-based program, the query criteria, and describe the specific tasks for which the AI was used (study design, data analysis, data visualization, text editing, literature search, etc.).
- Articles that do not disclose the use of GenAI and/or that contain large sections of AI-generated text may be rejected. The editorial staff uses the appropriate Antiplagiarism module to detect AI-generated text when reviewing manuscripts.
- Editors, editorial board members, and reviewers are not permitted to use GenAI when preparing reviews of articles, as its use poses a risk of compromising the privacy and infringing the intellectual property rights of the authors of their work.
This policy will be updated as generative AI tools develop and impact the research publication process.
